facing the new day
I woke up the next morning to an empty bed and the smell of food. Was that bacon? I closed my eyes again to take in the warmth of the covers one last time before I got up. If only we could stay inside today, away from the rest of the world.
Niklas’s footsteps sounded on the stairs, and the bedroom door creaked open. I kept my eyes closed and tried to suppress my smile. I felt him move closer. The bed sank under his weight, then shook as he crawled over the bed until his body eased down on mine.
His unshaven jaw scraped my neck.
“I know you’re awake,” he whispered.
His stubble traveled lower, tickling my shoulder. I laughed and opened my eyes. Niklas hovered over me, shirtless, his muscles flexing as he moved. Usually, when we were in this position, I was…well, too distracted to take in how each thick muscle strained and flexed. He was unbearably sexy like this. I wanted to take my time with him, to feel his smooth skin, to bite—
“Time to get up,” he said in my ear.
I raised an eyebrow.
“Are you sure?” I asked. My voice came out low and breathy, and I felt Niklas’s muscles tighten against me. He sat up on the bed and nodded.
“I made breakfast for us,” he said. “I have a meeting in an hour.”
I sat up and let the covers drop, leaving my top half naked.
He swore under his breath. “I know what you’re doing.”
I laughed and scooted off the bed. “I’m just giving you something to think about today.”
I glanced over my shoulder as I headed for his dresser.
He shook his head. “This isn’t the kind of thinking I’m supposed to be doing today.”
I felt his eyes on me as I bent down over his drawer. His breath hitched a little as I pulled out an old Red Wings t-shirt. I smiled and turned around before letting the shirt fall over my body.
“Ready,” I said, looking up at him.
His lips were parted, and he reached down to adjust himself. My smile widened, and I turned for the door.
“Come on,” I called, my voice still husky from sleep. “I’m hungry.”
I heard a mumble of foreign words as I walked up the stairs. It only took a moment for him to catch up with me. “Don’t you know by now that I can’t resist when you tease me?”
“Then don’t lie on top of me without a shirt if you’re not prepared for me to react,” I said.
He was right behind me, and he caught me around the waist with one hand and moved my hair off my neck with the other. His teeth scraped over my shoulder.
“Later,” he whispered, laughing.
I sat down at the table, and Niklas pulled the plates out of the oven: bacon, eggs and toast. He set down a cup of coffee next to my bowl of melon.
“A girl could get used to this kind of treatment,” I said.
He smiled. “I think I’ve exhausted my cooking repertoire.
